The total amount of tickets in a roll or book varies by state and by ticket cost.

Below is a table showing how many tickets are in a book and the total book cost for California, Florida, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, & Texas.

It’s common to find people or groups who buy $5, $10, $20, & $30 ticket books. The intent is to increase their chances of hitting one of the large prizes or jackpots…and it does. The vast majority of books will not be profitable, however. You can expect most books to return 60%-80% of what was spent. If you spent $500 on a book, expect to get $300-$400 back. You’re typically better off buying a few of the same ticket in a row if you want to profit some. Books are most likely going to lose 20%-40% unless you hit a large prize.

When buying full books of tickets, keep in mind that some tickets are more time-consuming and confusing than others. For example: the crossword and cashword tickets typically take longer to scratch and can be difficult to determine if you’ve won. This would not be ideal if you have 50 or 100 tickets to go through.

You can be strategic with your book buys to increase your odds of winning and profiting!

For example, let’s say it’s within your budget and you want to buy a $5 or $10 scratch ticket book in Florida. Using the table above, you will know that it will cost you either $300 for the $5 ticket book or $600 for the $10 ticket book. If you want to profit off that book, you are not going to do so with a bunch of small wins. You can typically expect 20%-30% Odds to Win in a book of tickets, which means in a book of 60 tickets, you should expect only 12–18 to win something. To profit off this $300 or $600 book, you will need to hit a $500+ win. Using a tool like LottoPlays, you are able to easily filter and sort for which $5 & $10 tickets have the best Current Odds to Win $500+

If you play often, your best bet in the long run, would be to go for the best Current Rate of Return tickets (considering all ticket prices).

For Florida, as of this screenshot taken on 10/28/21, that would mean the $30 “Fastest Road to $1,000,000” ticket would have your best return…83.57%

Look closely though and you’ll find some other good options too. The $5 “$1,000,000 Money Tree” ticket has a fairly close return of 79.62% but you would be risking much less money. Don’t expect to win $100+ as much with this $5 ticket compared to the $30 option, but in the long run with many tickets, you can expect a similar return.

Return rates will skew higher if there is a large prize left with few total tickets remaining for a game.

If you buy full books of scratch tickets or if you’re considering buying a book of scratch tickets, then you owe it to yourself to know which tickets are you better options and which tickets to avoid based on the live data calculations.
